Our Classroom's A Zoo!!

Last week our kiddos got to bring a zoo animal to school!

First.. we sorted our zoo animals into groups.

Land Animals...

and water animals.

Then we made a graph with our animals. We graphed them by species!

We had chameleons, turtles, bears, monkeys, foxes, dolphins, giraffes, frogs, zebras, wolves, and elephants!

Our conclusion after analyzing our data: Most students brought bears and monkeys.

At reading time, we read to our zoo animals!

Alligator Pie

Last Friday, in celebration of zoo animals, we made Alligator Pie!
Here is the poem we learned to go with it (ask your Kindergartener to recite it to you!):

Alligator Pie, Alligator Pie
If I don't get some...
I think I'm gonna cry!

Give away the green grass,
Give away the sky...
But don't give away my
Alligator Pie!

Look At What We've Been Up To!!

I have been meaning to post some pictures from the units we have been doing! Here are some from different units we have done recently. I love looking at them and seeing the bright faces of all our little learners and I know you will too!

LAST WEEK WE GOT DOWN ON THE FARM! :)

We had so much fun with our farm unit! We did fun math and literacy activities centered around the farm animal theme and read lots of non-fiction material about farm animals. We learned that different farm animals give us different things.. like cows give us milk which we use to make butter, cheese, and ice cream! In celebration of cows everywhere, we listened to some country music and made butter in our classroom! We sat in a circle and passed around a jar of heavy cream that we shook in order to churn it into butter. It was so much fun and very tasty!

We also read a book called Cook-a-Doodle-Doo. This story is very similar to the story of The Little Red Hen. However the main character in this book is a rooster who wants to make strawberry shortcake instead of a hen who wants to make bread. The children loved the story and had so much fun making their own strawberry shortcakes afterwards.. yum! Then for kid-writing, we started a how-to writing piece on How-To Make Strawberry Shortcake!

HERE IS THE BOOK WE READ TOGETHER:

FIRST YOU GET A SHORTCAKE....

NEXT, YOU PUT STRAWBERRIES ON TOP OF THE SHORTCAKE...

THEN, YOU PUT SOME WHIPPED CREAM ON TOP...

LAST, YOU EAT YOUR YUMMY STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE!!

INSECTS AND ARACHNIDS OH MY!

Mr. Carl Harper from the University of Kentucky visited our classroom a couple weeks ago. He works in the Entomology Department at UK. He had some very interesting friends to share with us.. and all the kids got to take home goodies too!
